Exterior Boundary Walls

steel insertsIt has become a part of our lives here in South Africa to make sure we have good boundary walls, not only for their aesthetic appeal, but as an added security feature.   As crime escalates at an alarming rate, we all need as much security protection for ourselves and our families as we can get.

Good quality boundary walls are a must, with added security.  Whether we have palisades or concrete walls, we need to plan carefully, before deciding which would be our best option.   Solid walls are great, and, very pleasing to the eye, and of course ensures we have privacy, but there is one drawback.

We erect high solid walls to get privacy, but we are then giving criminals privacy too.  Once inside our property, they cannot be seen by anyone from the streets, or by neighbours, and can move about without fear of detection.

A good option, therefore is facebrick walls with steel inserts.   We would still get a mode of privacy, but the steel inserts will ensure that, should an intruder be on our property, they would not be able to move around without detection.

wall with steel insertsFor over 25 years, Country Wide Walling has been in the walling industry, and through experience have developed an exceptionally strong, quality precast facebrick wall, which is manufactured by them, and then good, quality steel inserts added, to give their clients an exceptionally high quality product, which outlasts any of their competitors.

The walls surrounding our property demarcate the boundary of our property, and if it is of high quality and workmanship adds an aesthetic quality which enhances the value of our property.  Usually people first consider security, then privacy when deciding on enclosing their property.   The facebrick wall with steel inserts meets all requirements, from privacy to security to aesthetic appeal.

Stable Boundary Walls

cracksMany boundary walls are poorly built by people trying to cut costs, and not having the necessary experience and know-how skills base to build it safely.

A perimeter wall is built as a security feature to protect your family, and trying to cut costs and doing a poor job of constructing the wall can lead to it collapsing and seriously injuring a child or animal.

If a wall falls on a child it can cost a lot of money for hospitalization and doctor’s fees.  This money would have been better invested in getting your security walls safely and professionally installed by Country Wide Walling.

Bad designs, poor foundations and also the lack of expansion joints and support pillars usually result in boundary walls developing dangerous cracks and/or collapsing.

good boundary wallsWalls leaning over, or splitting apart or cracks in plaster, are all indications of a poorly constructed wall, and unfortunately, usually only become noticeable a long time after the builder has left the site.  You, as the homeowner believe you received a bargain priced wall, but the old saying “you get what you pay for” applies, and could lead to a loss of a lot more money should a child be badly injured with broken bones and a lengthy hospital stay.

If you are one of these homeowners, you need to keep a careful eye on the wall, and if any cracks appear, or the wall starts leaning over, it is best to pay urgent attention to the problem immediately, before anything serious happens.

The best solution is to tear the wall down, and have it professionally set up in order to not only provide security, but to avoid serious injury to a child, family member, or an animal.  In the end, this would be the safest, and most cost effective solution to a dodgy wall.

Always bear in mind that sound engineering principles also need to be applied to the design, manufacture and installation of boundary security walls.

Which Wall Works Best?

whichwallSouth Africans, unlike the Europeans and Americans, really value their privacy and for this reason, and for security of course, we are prone to build high walls around our properties
However, although these walls offer privacy, are they really as secure as we think? Once inside the property, the privacy offered will often work in favour of the criminal.

Most South African homes are guarded by sturdy garden walls, some of which are even topped with razor wire or electric fencing. However, the privacy that these walls offer the home's residents can really work against them in the event of a break-in, as the privacy will also be enjoyed and leveraged by the burglar once he or she has gained access to the property in question. There is no doubt that a good garden wall can act as a deterrent to criminals, but there are a number of considerations to take into account when choosing a particular type of wall – there are many different types to choose from, each with their pros and cons:

However, the privacy that these walls offer the home's residents can really work against them in the event of a break-in, as the privacy will also be enjoyed and leveraged by the burglar once he or she has gained access to the property in question. There is no doubt that a good garden wall can act as a deterrent to criminals, but there are a number of considerations to take into account when choosing a particular type of wall – there are many different types to choose from, each with their pros and cons:

Palisade fencing
If you can get over the lack of privacy, the security provided by palisade fencing is one of the most cost-effective ways of securing your property. The drawback of this type of fencing is that someone can dig beneath it and gain access to your property that way, as it does not go into the ground at all. To improve this situation, it is well worth your while to build a low wall beneath the fencing, this way the uprights can be installed into the wall and then the palisade can be erected above the bricks, giving you a relatively fool-proof system of security. If someone tries to climb over the wall, it will be obvious to neighbours and once they are in, they can easily be seen from the street.

concrete wallingPrefabricated concrete walling
This system is very good for homeowners looking to increase their privacy, as these walls can be erected in a very short time and for a relatively low cost. Once again, this system has its weaknesses – if you have an area of your wall covered by bush or you are in any way concealed from the neighbours or passersby, criminals can come by for a few days in a row and very cleverly bash out one or two panels near to the ground. Then they can wait for the right opportunity and crawl in underneath to gain access to your property. Once inside, the rest of the prefab wall will keep them covered. The best way to handle this problem with the least amount of expense, is to run a roll of razor wire along the bottom 70cm or so of the wall on the inside of your property. Install it and then plant a bed in front of it and allow an evergreen creeper of any sort to grow all over it to disguise it so that it won't be an eyesore.

Brick wall
If you are going to build a brick wall around your property, which is the most expensive route to go, then build a high wall. Get a qualified contractor to do the job, ensuring you have all the necessary plans drawn, as well as solid foundations and good damp-proofing. Nothing looks worse than a majestic garden wall with rising damp, destroying the paint work and plastering. At the driveway section, either build a lintel over the gate or opt for a tall gate to keep in style with the wall. Be sure to build the lintel high enough above the gate to allow delivery vehicles through, as building it too low can be a real inconvenience when you are moving or having items delivered to you. If the lintel is built too low, larger vans used for deliveries or moving will have to park outside, leaving the gate open during the process, allowing anyone to walk through during the loading/off-loading process.

Hedging
This kind of boundary "wall" takes a long time to grow and is usually grown over wire or palisade fencing. Before planting your hedge, make sure it is evergreen; otherwise your garden boundary will look ugly during the winter months. It is very good for privacy and just needs to be maintained regularly to be secure. If you buy a home with hedging on the boundary, before doing anything else, give it a good inspection for holes. Once you have secured it, keep it trimmed and well watered so it can become strong and healthy. It may seem to offer inferior security, but in reality, hedging is one of the most complicated kinds of walls to get over or through, especially if there is wire or palisade fencing at its core.

Tipsfencing

We all love trees and fully grown leafy trees on the pavement offers a wonderful leafy suburban ambience. However, if any of the trees' branches hang over the wall, it is very important to trim them back or to cut them down. This is one of the easiest ways to gain entry to a property over any wall. All shrubs that are large enough to conceal a person should also be removed. This will protect you from the possibility of being attacked in your driveway by criminals who have been hiding behind these bushes waiting for your return. Put a few lights around the entrance to your property so as not to get any surprises when arriving home late at night. For extra piece of mind, most boundary fencing and walls can be made more secure by installing electric fencing along the entire length of the wall

Easy ideas for perimeter walls

perimeter-wallToday’s homeowner has a wide choice of options to choose from when building perimeter walls to add privacy to a garden. Why settle for ordinary when you have the alternative to add extra appeal to your home and garden.

In a country that values its privacy and security, South Africans have adopted the practice of building high walls to offer a way to escape from high crime. While high boundary walls may act as a deterrent and offer a sense of security, they also offer a would-be burglar with the privacy they need should they gain access to the property.
We may not ever reach the stage where we can enjoy the freedom experienced in other countries, but there are a variety of modern walling solutions that offer privacy and add curb appeal while still offering a level of security, without making a homeowner feel that he is trapped behind high walls.

A common sight around many homes, vibracrete or precast concrete walls have been a fast and affordable solution for enclosing a property. Cast concrete panels are supported via concrete pillars to provide both privacy and a level of security.boundary perimeter walls Nowadays you will find more attractive alternatives to the plain concrete slabs with the introduction of more decorative concrete panels and pillars.

The realistic stone effect can be manufactured in a variety of patterns to match almost any architectural style and can be customised to a specific height, or to accommodate timber or steel fencing.

Pallisade walling, whether concrete or steel, allows you to secure the boundary of a property without the need for high walls. If the area on both sides of the fence is kept free of obstructions, palisade walling or fencing offers another level of security, since would-be burglars have no place to hide.

palisadeIf you are looking at this option for walling around your property, consider the alternative of having a concrete apron or base laid at the base of the fence. This rules out the possibility of being able to dig out underneath to gain access. Alternatively, have the palisade fence fitted on top of a concrete or brick wall.

While concrete palisades offer a more affordable alternative to steel fencing, they are not as attractive. However, for the lazy homeowner they do require less maintenance.

Face brick walls, while one of the more expensive solutions for a home, are also one of the most popular choices, especially when matching walls to face brick exteriors. When properly built, a face brick wall requires no maintenance and is a solution to property walls.

However, with a face brick wall you have the option to tackle this as a do-it-yourself project, or have a professional contractor do the job for you. If you do plan to do this as a DIY project, ensure that you follow building regulations as concerns height and width, and allow for solid foundations, damp-proofing and brick course reinforcement. When built properly a face brick wall is a maintenance-free.

The popularity of timber fencing for boundary walls, particularly at the front of a property, is a growing trend as homeowners look for alternatives to brick or precast walls. Timber fencing might require more maintenance to keep it looking good, but there’s no denying that is also adds timeless style and curb appeal to any home exterior.

BELOW: Sourcing reclaimed timber for use as a fencing material will cut down on the cost if you decide to opt for a timber boundary fence. Salvage yards, auction and online sales are the places to watch for these materials.

woodIf you decide to go with the option of timber fencing, look at timber species offered for the construction and how much maintenance each species requires.

Gabions are another walling option that is growing in popularity. Again, not a cheap option but definitely one that adds curb appeal and can be incorporated into walling in so many ways.
Gabions are wire baskets filled with pebbles, rocks or stones that are stacked on top of each other to construct an extremely dry-packed stone wall. When used as retaining walls the gabions allow natural drainage without loss of strength.

Gabion baskets are available locally for the homeowner who wants to look at this as a DIY option, while several companies offer full installation services for the discerning homeowner. Not an inexpensive alternative by any means, a gabion wall is, however, distinctive and aesthetically pleasing. Installers offer a choice of rock fill, giving the homeowner the option to create a natural landscape, while some can be filled with recycled materials, or planted up with moss and soil and planted with succulents to create a soft landscaping effect

BELOW: To bring down the cost of installing a gabion wall, consider using gabions only for the lower section and installing bamboo or pole fencing for privacy at the top.

gabionBELOW: There are many ways to soften concrete or plaster walls. Plant a screen of elegant bamboo plants.
