Dry Rot

dry rotWe have discussed the damage that wet rot can do to a fence, but that is not the only rot to attack a wooden fence.

There is also dry rot.

The loss of protective oils over the wood surface cause the wood to dry out and become flaky and brittle, which causes your fence to fall apart.

This is called dry rot.

Your fence is exposed to sun and wind and all types of weather conditions, though exposure to especially sun is more of a problem, as all the oils on the wood get dried out and cause dry rot to take over.

To protect your fence, you need to stain it at least once a year, to replace protective oils, and prevent the fence from drying out.

power washing wooden fenceBy regularly cleaning your fence you are helping to prevent rot from attacking, thus adding years to the life of the fence.

Although it is not the most pleasant job, it does help in preventing rot. Investing time on your fence will help to lengthen the lifespan.

A high-pressure washer set on a low setting can successfully be used to wash away dirt, grime, leaves etc., This must be done regularly to protect the fence from rot.

If a fence is badly affected by dry rot, patches will start flaking and falling off. Before you can stain the fence, it has to be totally dry, and, if necessary, the sections badly affected by the rot must be removed and replaced.

Although a wooden fence is less expensive than a concrete one, in the long run, a good quality concrete prefab fence is a far better option, not only for security, but because it adds value to your property.

If your fence is badly damaged by rot, there is no other option than to replace it, and a good option would be to invest in a precast concrete fence, or wall.

When to Replace Your Fence

rotIf you have a wooden fence, the repairs and upkeep costs can start to skyrocket as time goes by. There are signs to look out for, to indicate when replacing would be the better option.

Should your wooden fence be past it’s best years, and constantly in need of repair, take note of the signs, and invest in a fence which will last for many years without the problem of constant repairs and upkeep.

1. Rot
2. Warping
3. Damage
4. Leaning
5. Loose Fasteners
6. Discolouration

No matter how frequently you fix your fence, age and climate are a huge factor in determining the life of the fence.

need new fenceWhen the repair costs escalate and it costs more to keep repairing the fence than replacing it, then you know the fence has reached the end of it’s life time, and it would be more cost effective to replace it.

Investing in a prefab concrete fence or wall is a really good decision, and well worth the investment.

Although there are still people who prefer wooden fencing, they are not as long lasting as a good quality concrete prefab fence, or wall, that is coloured during the manufacturing process, so never needs to be repainted to keep it looking aesthetically pleasing.

It is a really good option to install concrete fencing, whether palisade, plain or a pleasing design, as the maintenance is nearly non-existent, therefore your initial investment is well worth the money.

Steel Gate Safety

sliding steel security gateMaking sure our homes or businesses are safe by installing good quality walling or fencing is not our only priority.

We also need to ensure that we have strong gates which are working properly.

To ensure the gates are in good working condition, it is advisable to check them regularly to ensure they are functioning as they should be.

Check regularly that there is nothing on the gate tracks to prevent it from closing properly, e.g. mud or debris. Once the gate is stopped from closing by any obstacle, it will merely open again, and will then give easy access to your property.

anti vandalismYou can also install an anti-vandalism bracket on your gate, to prevent anyone from tampering with it, and thus giving easy access. Another good idea is to have an anti-crashing kit fitted which links to your alarm system. This will ensure that the alarm is activated should anyone try to tamper with the gate.

Whether you choose steel swinging gates, or steel sliding gates, always check to see that they are in proper working condition.

Steel gates are a very good option, as they do not offer easy access to your properly as would for instance a wooden gate.

If you would like more information on steel sliding gates, or steel swing gates, or for a free quotation, please do not hesitate to contact us at Country Wide Walling. Our consultants will be happy to assist you
