Perimeter Security Fencing

security wallSecuring our properties with good security fencing is now a prerequisite in South Africa.   We are all aware of the high crime rate, and to keep our family and property safe is our number one priority.

High boundary walls seem to be the best option, but do you know, criminals love high walls.  They can scale the walls and enter your property, and once there they are invisible to neighbours and passers-by.

Having a low wall with steel palisade fencing inserts is a good option, although it does limit your privacy if that is your main concern.  The low wall will prevent small children and animals from wandering out into the streets, and the palisade will give you a perfect few of all passers-by and anyone attempting to enter, and if you have devils fork razor wire or electric wiring on top, it will be a good deterrent.

A solid wall is not a deterrent to criminals, unless you have electric wiring or razor wire at the top to stop thempalisade climbing over.  There are many options for secure boundary fencing, and we need to explore each option before making a decision as to which fencing is best suited to our needs.

It is always a good idea to make provision for 100mm drainage pipes every few metres to provide drainage for surplus groundwater that might otherwise dam up behind the wall.  Drainage pipes are very good, especially in high rainfall areas.

Perimeter Fencing for High-Security Protection

wall securityWith security our priority, and the first line of defence around our premises, boundary fence security is vitally important.

Appropriate high-security fencing can act as an effective deterrent to would be criminal intruders.
In today’s continued criminal climate in South Africa, we need to be sure that we have done the best we can, to defend our properties and hard-earned goods.  We pay for whatever we have in our homes, so we need to make sure that we keep everything safe from free-loading shoppers with criminal intent.

With our perimeter fencing as our first line of defence, there are various options available to us, electric fencing, electronic surveillance, CCTV systems, razor wire, etc.  In most cases we need a combination of these options to give us relative peace of mind.

Boundary security is necessary for the following reasons:

1.      Deters some intruders from gaining access
2.      Is off-putting to some would-be intruders
3.    Detects determined intruders when they attempt to access your property or try to remove anything.
4.    Delays and aids in apprehending would-be intruders

Pitfalls to Avoid

There are a few common pitfalls we can avoid to ensure our safety. trees

  • Always repair holes, as they provide easy access.
  • Have no trees close to fencing as they can be used to climb over the fencing.
  • Do not leave rubbish bins out on the pavement, as they provide aid in climbing over fencing.
  • Make sure you do regular checks to make sure that nobody is secretly digging a hole under your fencing, or that someone is chipping away at your walls, bit by bit, and make sure that trees are cut back to avoid easy access if you do have them close to walls or fencing.

The best remedy for trees is to remove them and only plant at a safe distance from all boundary security.  Plant prickly plants like the fire thorn at the base of your walling or fence, they are not plants to mess with.

Should you notice any of these things, it is wise to get it all sorted out quickly so as not to compromise all your security.

Concrete Security Walls

ready made wallConcrete walls can be decorative and not just a dull grey structure as we imagine.   During the manufacturing process, permanent colour can be added to the wet concrete mix to ensure that the colour will be permanent, and the walls will not need to be painted in the future.
Alternatively, the walls can be painted at a later stage,, to incorporate the desired colour to complement the design of the property or wall.

Concrete is the perfect walling material as it does not rust like steel, and is very limited maintenance, as well as being very durable, stable, and long lasting.

Why settle for ordinary, when you can have a wall that is not only strong, durable, but also aesthetically pleasing.   In South Africa we value our privacy and security.   We tend to build high walls as a sense of security and a deterrent to would be criminals.   It is therefore a good idea to have a concrete fencerazor wire of about 2.4m and top it with palisade, razor wire, barbed wire, or electric fencing.

Unfortunately the high walls also offer criminals a good way to be undetected once they are in your property.  There are many aspects of security to take into account when deciding on a security wall for our properties, therefore it is a good idea to discuss all pros and cons with an expert who can advise and guide us to make the correct choice for the safety of our family and property.

Country Wide Walling are walling specialists and can give you expert advice and guidance, to ensure you have the best security possible.

Crime Prevention Boundary Protection

fire thornThere are many ways to make it difficult for criminals to access your property.   You need to make it as unattractive a prospect as possible.

Boundary fences need to be high and of good quality with a topping that will deter anyone from attempting to climb over.

A good perimeter wall would be a low wall with palisades so that there is no place for an intruder to hide if they do get in.   Topping the palisades with spikes is a good idea and an extra deterrent.

Wall foundations need to be deep too, to prevent anyone digging their way in. If you need to allow for runoff water, pipes can be built into the bottom of the walls at intervals.

An excellent deterrent is to have a trellis on the top of the fence and a thorny plant growing over the trellis.   Nobody likes their hands cut to pieces, or the pain of the thorns digging in deep.  Prickly bushes and hedges around your garden can also act as a deterrent.

pyrancantha firethornTrellis won’t support weight, and besides being noisy when it breaks, it will also bring the thorny plant down on whoever is trying to climb over, and can cause some real bad damage to a would be criminal.

Pyrocanthus (aka fire thorn) is a good option, but takes a bit of time to grow properly.   A rambling rose is also good.  It is thorny but has the advantage of aesthetic appeal when blooming.

The only drawback to these plants is that they will need to be pruned to keep them looking good, but is still a small price to pay for security.

This is another idea to keep you safe and protect your property.

Electrified palisade fences

electrified palisadeAn electrified palisade fence is a steel or aluminium palisade fence used as a defensive barrier for the protection of property, particularly in isolated regions.

Typical construction

Electrified palisade fences are usually made from painted mild steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminium. Typically the fences are 2.4 metres (7 ft 10 in). All electric fences have energisers which send high voltage electric pulses through the palisade, usually at a frequency of 1 Hertz (one pulse per second).

Uses

The two most common uses of electrified palisade fencing is in protecting isolated property and in the defence of high security facilities. Palisade electric fences are used in most countries, particularly where there is little vegetation to short circuit the fence or where the costs of security personnel is high in relation to automated security equipment.

Isolated property is vulneelectrified fencingrable in that it is difficult or time consuming to send security personnel to respond and so must be self sufficient with an automated security system. The electric pulse is a strong deterrent for criminals, while the palisade fence is mechanically stronger than a typical steel cable electric fence being able to withstand impact from wildlife, small falling trees and wildfires.

South Africa

Due to the high levels of crime in South Africa, it is common for residential houses to have perimeter defences. The City of Johannesburg promotes the use of palisade fencing over opaque, usually brick, walls as criminals cannot hide as easily behind the fence. In the City of Johannesburg manual on safety one can read about best practices and maintenance of palisade fencing, such as not growing vegetation in front of palisades as this allows criminals to make an unseen breach.
